Ingredient profile

Gymnema sylvestre in Glyco Harmony

Quick answer

Gymnema leaf extract is eighth in Glyco Harmony's 200 mg blend, so one dropper holds at most 25 mg, and likely less. Trials used 200 to 400 mg a day of a standardized extract and found a small drop in fasting glucose. Gymnema also dulls sweet taste for a while. It may add to diabetes medicines.

01On the label

What does the label say about gymnema sylvestre?

One line, 'Gymnema Leaf Extract', eighth in the proprietary blend. No amount, no standardization.

The label does not say how much gymnemic acid the extract holds. That matters, because the trials that found an effect mostly used extracts set to 25% gymnemic acids (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Without that figure, even the type of extract is unknown.

02The plant

What is Gymnema sylvestre?

A plant whose leaves are used in Ayurvedic tradition, where it is known as the 'sugar destroyer'.

The leaves are the part used. Extracts are often standardized to their gymnemic acid content, and the trials that found an effect mostly used extracts set to 25% (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). The plant's best-known effect is on the tongue: it reduces sweet taste for a while.

That taste effect gave gymnema its reputation in blood sugar products. The idea is old. The proof is thin. Most of what is known comes from small trials and lab work, and good large trials are still missing (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph).

The photo at the top of the page is a brand stock image of green leaf powder. It is used here for gymnema, but nothing in it identifies the plant.

03Dose check

What does eighth place in the blend allow?

A ceiling of 25 mg per dropper. The trials started at 200 mg.

The blend lists ingredients from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Seven lines weigh at least as much as gymnema, so it can be no more than one eighth of 200 mg. If the blend were split evenly, it would be closer to 9 mg.

Even at the ceiling and the label's top dose, gymnema reaches a quarter of the lowest studied amount. The real share is not disclosed. Read the label explained page for how the order works.

04The research

What did gymnema studies find for blood sugar?

A small but measurable drop in fasting glucose across 10 small studies. Not a treatment.

A 2021 meta-analysis pooled 10 small studies. Gymnema lowered fasting glucose by a statistically significant amount, but the size of the change was small in clinical terms (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Statistically significant means unlikely to be chance. It does not mean large.

The studies were small and used doses far above anything in the drops. Health agencies still find no herb proven to control diabetes, and the NCCIH warns against replacing medical care with an unproven product (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). The American Diabetes Association adds that supplements have not been shown to help glucose unless you lack a nutrient (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

The honest summary

Gymnema is one of the better-studied herbs in the blend. The research still does not show what a few milligrams in a liquid would do, and no trial has tested Glyco Harmony itself.

05Sweet taste

Does gymnema change how sweet foods taste?

Yes, for a while. That is its best-known effect, and it is about taste, not glucose.

  • What is known: reduced sweet taste is the effect most reported for gymnema (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph).
  • What is not known: whether the small amount in the drops is enough to notice.
  • In the bottle: the base is sweetened with stevia and xylitol, so the drops still taste sweet as printed.

A blunted sweet taste is a change in the mouth. It is not a measure of blood sugar, and it should not be read as one.

06Brand claims

Which Glyco Harmony claims lean on gymnema?

Mainly 'Support Balanced Blood Sugar Levels' and 'Aid in Managing Carbohydrate Metabolism'.

The brand's poster lists five things the drops support. Two of them, balanced blood sugar and carbohydrate metabolism, are the ones gymnema research speaks to most. They are support claims under supplement rules, not results from a test of the product.

The FTC expects health claims to rest on human trials of the same product at the same dose (FTC, Health Products Compliance Guidance). Gymnema's trials do not meet that bar for Glyco Harmony. Our claims vs evidence page checks each one.

07Safety

Is gymnema safe with diabetes medicine?

Ask your doctor first. Gymnema may add to the effect of glucose-lowering drugs (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph).

Insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides can cause lows on their own (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). Adding an herb that may nudge glucose the same way is worth a talk with your care team. Keep taking prescribed medicine; never stop or change it because of a supplement.

Two flags to know

Shakiness, sweating, confusion or a racing heart can signal a low; treat it with fast sugar and call 911 if someone faints or has a seizure. Separately, one case of liver injury linked to gymnema has been reported, and it cleared after stopping (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph).

The safety page covers every flag in the blend.

08FAQ

Glyco Harmony questions people ask

What is Gymnema sylvestre used for?

In supplements it is sold for blood sugar support, based on its old Ayurvedic use and small trials. Its clearest proven effect is dulling sweet taste. No supplement, gymnema included, is a diabetes treatment.

Why is gymnema called the sugar destroyer?

The nickname comes from Ayurvedic tradition and fits its effect on the tongue: it reduces sweet taste for a while. It does not destroy sugar in the body, and the drops make no such claim.

How much gymnema do studies use?

Most blood sugar trials used 200 to 400 mg a day of an extract standardized to 25% gymnemic acids; others used 500 to 1,000 mg of leaf extract (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Glyco Harmony does not state its amount or standardization.

Does gymnema lower A1C?

Good evidence is lacking. A 2021 meta-analysis of 10 small studies found a small drop in fasting glucose, and robust trials are still missing (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). Your A1C is best handled with your doctor's plan.

Can gymnema hurt your liver?

It appears rare. One reported case of liver injury linked to gymnema cleared after it was stopped (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph). If you have liver disease, tell your doctor about every supplement you use.

Can I take gymnema with metformin?

Ask your doctor first. Gymnema may add to the effect of diabetes medicines (Drugs.com, Gymnema monograph), and the ADA warns that some supplements cause lows alongside them (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements). Keep your prescribed doses unchanged.
