Ingredient profile

Sweeteners and xylitol in Glyco Harmony

Quick answer

Glyco Harmony's drops sit in a glycerin and water base, sweetened with stevia extract (Reb A) and xylitol and flavored with lemon. Sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate keep it fresh. A licorice compound sits inside the blend. None of these amounts is printed. The big safety point is xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs.

01Label facts

What does the label say about the sweeteners and base liquid?

Nine 'other ingredients' under the panel, plus one sweet compound inside the blend.

Below the Supplement Facts box, the label reads: "Glycerin, Water, Organic Lemon Extract, Stevia Extract 97% (Reb A), Xylitol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, and Natural Flavors." These carry, sweeten and protect the active blend.

02The base

What is each other ingredient doing in the bottle?

Every drop needs a liquid to hold the extracts, a taste people will accept, and something to stop spoilage.

03Pets

Why is the xylitol in Glyco Harmony a danger to dogs?

Xylitol can crash a dog's blood sugar within an hour. A chewed bottle or a spilled dropper is an emergency for a dog.

The FDA says xylitol can cause a rapid, dangerous drop in blood sugar in dogs, within 10 to 60 minutes of eating it (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol). Signs include vomiting, weakness, collapse and seizures. The label does not say how much xylitol the drops contain, so treat any amount as a risk.

  1. Store it high

Keep the bottle in a closed cabinet, not on a low table or in a handbag on the floor.

  2. Wipe up drips

A drop on the floor is easy for a dog to lick. Clean spills right away.

  3. Call fast

If your dog may have swallowed any, call your vet or an animal poison control line at once (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol).

People are different

The FDA notes that xylitol does not set off the same insulin release in people that it does in dogs (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol). The warning is about pets, not about you.

04Stevia

Is the stevia in Glyco Harmony a recognized safe form?

Yes. The label names a 97% Reb A extract, a high-purity form the FDA has not questioned.

Stevia comes in many grades. The FDA has not questioned GRAS notices for high-purity steviol glycosides, 95% or more, including Rebaudioside A (FDA, Aspartame and Other Sweeteners). GRAS means "generally recognized as safe" for use in food.

The label lists "Stevia Extract 97% (Reb A)". That fits the high-purity group. Whole-leaf and crude stevia extracts are a different matter: they are not considered GRAS as sweeteners (FDA, Aspartame and Other Sweeteners).

Stevia and xylitol let the drops taste sweet without table sugar on the label. The panel shows no sugar or calorie line at all.

05Licorice compound

What is monoammonium glycyrrhizinate on the Glyco Harmony label?

A salt of glycyrrhizin, the sweet compound in licorice root. It sits at line 18 of the blend.

Glycyrrhizin gives licorice its strong sweetness. In Glyco Harmony it appears as monoammonium glycyrrhizinate, between beta-alanine and GABA. By label order it cannot weigh more than about 11 mg per dropper.

The NCCIH warns that glycyrrhizin can cause serious effects such as an irregular heartbeat, mostly with large or long-term use (NCCIH, Licorice Root). People with high blood pressure may be at risk even from small amounts. Large amounts are unsafe in pregnancy, and interactions with corticosteroids have been reported.

The share in the drops is small. It still adds to licorice from candy, teas and other products. If you have high blood pressure, count it.

06Cautions

Who should be careful with the sweeteners and the licorice compound?

Dog owners, people with high blood pressure, people on corticosteroids, and anyone pregnant.

  • Dog owners. Xylitol can harm dogs quickly (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol).
  • High blood pressure or heart rhythm problems. Glycyrrhizin can raise risk even in small amounts (NCCIH, Licorice Root).
  • Corticosteroid users. Interactions with licorice have been reported (NCCIH, Licorice Root).
  • Pregnancy. The label asks pregnant or nursing mothers to see a physician first.
Keep taking prescribed medicine; never stop or change it because of a supplement

07Badges

Does the '100% natural' badge fit the base ingredients?

Not fully. The label lists two preservatives next to the plant extracts.

The brand shows a "100% natural ingredients" badge. The label also lists sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate. Both are common food preservatives, but few shoppers would call them natural.

That does not make the drops unsafe. Preservatives keep a water-based liquid from spoiling. It does show why badges need a second look. The label says to store the bottle cool, dry and away from heat, light and humidity. Our quality page notes what each badge does and does not prove.

08FAQ

Glyco Harmony questions people ask

What should I do if my dog licks Glyco Harmony drops?

Call your vet or an animal poison control line right away. The drops contain xylitol, and the FDA says it can cause a dangerous blood sugar drop in dogs within 10 to 60 minutes (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol). Do not wait for signs like vomiting, weakness or collapse before calling.

Does xylitol affect people the same way it affects dogs?

No. The FDA notes that xylitol does not trigger the same insulin release in people that it does in dogs (FDA, Paws Off Xylitol). In Glyco Harmony it is one of two sweeteners in the base, and its amount is not printed. The danger it carries is for pets in your home.

Is Reb A stevia safe to eat?

High-purity stevia extracts are considered safe for food use. The FDA has not questioned GRAS notices for steviol glycosides of 95% purity or more, including Rebaudioside A (FDA, Aspartame and Other Sweeteners). Glyco Harmony's label lists a 97% Reb A extract, which is in that group. Crude stevia extracts are treated differently.

Can the licorice compound in Glyco Harmony raise blood pressure?

It could add a little. Glycyrrhizin can raise blood pressure and affect heart rhythm, and people with high blood pressure may be at risk even from small amounts (NCCIH, Licorice Root). Glyco Harmony holds at most about 11 mg per dropper. Ask your doctor if you have high blood pressure.

Why does Glyco Harmony contain sodium benzoate?

It is a preservative. Glyco Harmony is a water and glycerin liquid, and the label lists sodium benzoate with potassium sorbate to help keep it fresh. The amounts are not printed. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place away from heat and light, as the label asks.

Is Glyco Harmony alcohol free?

The label lists no alcohol. Its base is glycerin and water, with lemon extract, stevia, xylitol, two preservatives, citric acid and natural flavors. If you must avoid alcohol completely for medical or religious reasons, confirm the flavor sources with the order desk at +1 (925) 231-0148 before you buy.
