Ingredient profile

The 8 amino acids in Glyco Harmony

Quick answer

Eight amino acids fill the lower half of Glyco Harmony's blend: L-glutamine, L-tyrosine, L-arginine, beta-alanine, GABA, L-ornithine, L-tryptophan and L-carnitine. By label order each one holds about 14 mg or less per dropper. Studies of these nutrients used grams a day. L-carnitine is the only one with type 2 diabetes research, and L-tryptophan carries interaction cautions.

02The role

Why would a blood sugar blend include amino acids?

The label does not say. Most are known from sports research.

Sports studies gave glutamine, arginine and beta-alanine in grams (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance). The body makes its own L-carnitine (NIH ODS, Carnitine). GABA, L-tyrosine and L-ornithine have no verified dose source we could cite.

The brand gives no reason for adding them. See how they fit the whole panel in what 1 mL holds.

The Supplement Facts panel cut from the Glyco Harmony label, ending with L-Glutamine, L-Tyrosine, L-Arginine Base, Beta-Alanine, GABA, L-Ornithine HCL, L-Typtophan and L-Carnitine Base
The Supplement Facts crop from the flat label. The eight amino acids close the blend list, and the panel misspells tryptophan as 'Typtophan'.

03Shares vs research

How do the amino acid shares compare with studied doses?

Research used grams. A dropper holds milligrams.

    1 dropper (1 mL)9.1 mg (average)
2 droppers (label maximum)18.2 mg (average)

Diabetes studies used grams. The bottle's whole blend is 0.2 g per mL. (NIH ODS, Carnitine)

Coral bars are what Glyco Harmony gives at 1 and 2 droppers, from the label. Only chromium has a printed amount; for blend ingredients we use the average share, 200 mg divided by 22, which is about 9 mg per mL. The real shares are not disclosed (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). Sage bars are the lowest daily amount of that ingredient alone in studies. A tiny bar is kept visible so you can see it.

04L-carnitine

Does L-carnitine help with blood sugar?

Possibly a little, at grams a day. The drops hold milligrams.

The NIH says studies in type 2 diabetes used about 2-3 g of carnitine a day (NIH ODS, Carnitine). A broader analysis used 0.25-4 g. Some found better fasting glucose, and larger trials are still needed.

In Glyco Harmony, L-carnitine is the last blend line: about 9 mg per dropper at most, 18 mg at two. The smallest dose in the broader analysis is roughly 14 times that.

Healthy people generally do not need extra carnitine, the NIH adds. Compare the bottle's one stated amount in the chromium profile.

05L-tryptophan

Why does L-tryptophan come with extra caution?

A 1989 outbreak, and its effect on serotonin drugs.

  1. 1989

An outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome was linked to manufactured L-tryptophan. More than 1,500 people were affected and 37 deaths were attributed to it (NORD, Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome).

  2. November 1989

The FDA issued a nationwide warning and recall. Nearly all cases traced back to one maker's products (NORD, Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome).

  3. Today

L-tryptophan is sold again. Drug guides warn against mixing it with MAO inhibitors, tramadol or other serotonin boosters without medical advice (Drugs.com, L-tryptophan).

The drops hold under 10 mg per dropper. No lab report is published.

06Cautions

Who should be careful with the amino acids in Glyco Harmony?

Four groups should ask a doctor or pharmacist first.

  • Serotonin medicines. L-tryptophan can stack with some antidepressants and pain drugs (Drugs.com, L-tryptophan).
  • Blood pressure and heart. Arginine can lower blood pressure and add to blood pressure drugs. After an acute heart attack it may raise the risk of death (MSKCC, Arginine).
  • Pregnancy. L-tryptophan is considered likely unsafe in pregnancy (Drugs.com, L-tryptophan). The label asks pregnant or nursing mothers to see a physician.
  • Thyroid or MAOI drugs. With no verified tyrosine source, ask your doctor if you take either.

07FAQ

Glyco Harmony questions people ask

Is L-tryptophan safe in supplements today?

It is sold legally again, but it has a history. A 1989 outbreak of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome was linked to contaminated L-tryptophan from one manufacturer (NORD, Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome). Today the main cautions are mixing it with serotonin drugs and use in pregnancy (Drugs.com, L-tryptophan). Glyco Harmony lists it near the end of its blend.

Can L-arginine drop blood pressure too low?

It can lower blood pressure and may add to blood pressure medicines, according to Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSKCC, Arginine). The arginine share in Glyco Harmony is at most about 12.5 mg per dropper, far below study doses. Still, if you take blood pressure drugs or had a recent heart attack, ask first.

Does L-carnitine help type 2 diabetes?

Some studies suggest a small benefit at grams a day. The NIH notes type 2 diabetes trials used about 2-3 g daily, with some fasting glucose improvement, and says larger trials are needed (NIH ODS, Carnitine). Glyco Harmony lists L-carnitine last, so it holds about 9 mg per dropper at most.

Will beta-alanine in Glyco Harmony make my skin tingle?

Very unlikely. Beta-alanine causes a harmless tingling at single doses of 800 mg or more (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance). Glyco Harmony's beta-alanine is line 17 of a 200 mg blend, so it cannot pass about 12 mg per dropper. If you feel tingling, look at other products you take.

Can L-tryptophan in Glyco Harmony interact with antidepressants?

It could add to some serotonin-raising drugs. Drug guides say not to use L-tryptophan with MAO inhibitors, tramadol, dextromethorphan, meperidine or sedatives without medical advice (Drugs.com, L-tryptophan). The amount in the drops is small and not disclosed. Ask your prescriber before starting, and keep your antidepressant exactly as prescribed.

How many grams of amino acids are in Glyco Harmony?

Far less than one gram. The whole blend weighs 200 mg per 1 mL dropper, and the eight amino acids share its lower half. Label order means together they can weigh at most about 82 mg per dropper. Amino acid studies used grams a day for each one (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance).
